San Juan, Puerto Rico (Mar. 27, 2024) – Puerto Rico Governor Pedro R. Pierluisi along with representatives from the Department of Housing and Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) visited Trailer Bridge’s Army Terminal in Puerto Rico this week to announce a historic $85.3 million investment in the rehabilitation of the terminal’s finger pier. The investment is key to increasing terminal efficiencies and supporting the company’s continued weekly Jones Act service to the island
The funds are being allocated from the CDBG-MIT infrastructure program. At the announcement, Puerto Rico Ports Authority Executive Director Joel Pizá Batiz said this project, “contributes to the construction of a more resilient maritime transport infrastructure system.” The Army Terminal where Trailer Bridge operates is owned by PRPA.
“The foundation of our business began by serving the people of Puerto Rico and this historic investment is one worth celebrating,” said Trailer Bridge CEO Mitch Luciano. “As a critical piece of the supply chain serving the island, funding projects like this are essential to our ability to develop and maintain continuity of service. We appreciate the commitment of our elected officials to prioritize this project and ultimately a brighter future for Puerto Rico.”
The company recently made significant investments in the terminal infrastructure to provide customers with an efficient and seamless shipping experience. Terminal upgrades included the installation of new lighting, new pavement, a refurbished ramp, and new offices for employees and customers. Trailer Bridge also implemented a new terminal operating system to increase visibility for equipment and cargo and partnered with a new security firm to provide a safer workplace.
In early 2021 Trailer Bridge signed its first 20-year lease agreement with the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, and then mirrored that agreement with a long-term lease for its U.S. terminal with JAXPORT in 2022 – solidifying the strong relationship and continued support of shippers’ needs to and from the island.
