Drayage FAQs

Drayage is the act of transporting cargo over a short distance by truck. Drayage movements can apply to many types of shipments – port to receiver, shipper to origin rail terminal, shipper to port, port to rail yard, or destination rail to terminal or receiver.

Drayage is the movement of freight – typically by truck – over a short distance, typically within a 250-mile radius of its origin point. A truck will pick up the freight from its origin point and transport it over the road to its next destination.

A typical drayage move requires a truck and container and chassis, although, it can also include a dry van trailer or specialty trailer such as a reefer depending on the type of freight being shipped.

Yes, Trailer Bridge provides drayage services for port-to-port and ramp-to-ramp shipments. We have capacity with drivers who hold a TWIC badge in all major U.S. ports as well as capacity across the nation’s network of rail ramps.

A Transportation Worker identification Credential (TWIC) is a federal card that grants a driver access to secure port facilities. This required identification was made mandatory by the Maritime Transportation Security Act passed in 2002 to enhance security for domestic maritime facilities and the vessels that call those ports.

Any dray move that originates or has a final destination within a port location requires a driver to have a TWIC badge. If the driver does not have this important credential, they will be required to pay a fee to have a TWIC escort accompany them while traversing a port terminal. These fees vary by port location.
